December's Feeling Opinionated: The Danger of Distraction: Misinformation, Failed Leadership, and the Consequences of a Flawed Democracy

Beyoncé said it best: America has a problem. In today’s political chaos, misinformation has become the weapon of choice for failed leaders, and none wield it more dangerously than Donald Trump. As we move on from another pivotal election, his strategy of using blatant falsehoods to distract from his incompetence hasn’t evolved since 2016. But the damage it causes has only grown.

Watching his debate performance felt like déjà vu. The same fear-mongering, the same shameless lies. From baseless claims about ninth-month abortions to outrageous fabrications like immigrants eating cats and dogs, Trump’s rhetoric is nothing more than a smokescreen, a desperate attempt to divert attention from his failures as a leader. As a student deeply invested in political activism and with aspirations to study political science, I’ve seen how these lies not only warp policy discussions but also harm marginalized communities. This isn’t just a political game; it’s a deliberate assault on truth and democracy.

Misinformation: Trump’s Favorite Weapon

Trump’s entire political existence is built on misinformation. From branding immigrants as “rapists” to perpetuating conspiracy theories about election fraud, his goal has always been to sow fear, not to offer solutions. His debate was no different, a performance filled with lies meant to scare voters. And it works. Trump is a master at tapping into fear and prejudice, particularly against immigrants. Instead of addressing real issues like healthcare or the economy, he and his allies peddle dangerous, unfounded narratives to distract from their failures.

Take one of the most egregious examples: Trump’s false claim that Haitian immigrants were eating cats and dogs in Ohio. Despite being debunked, Trump doubled down. Why? Because fear sells, and in Trump’s world, facts are expendable. This kind of rhetoric isn’t just offensive…it’s dangerous. It fuels racist stereotypes, deepens divisions, and prevents serious discussions on issues like immigration reform, healthcare, and gun control.

Trump’s Hypocrisy and Dangerous Rhetoric

It’s not just misinformation that defines Trump; it’s his blatant hypocrisy. He calls himself “pro-life” but refuses to support meaningful gun reform, even as children are gunned down in schools. He boasts about protecting “family values,” yet his policies have stripped funding for food assistance and affordable housing, disproportionately harming families he claims to defend.

How can he call himself pro-life when he turns his back on the children that are here?

Trump’s hypocrisy is even more glaring when he rails against “criminals” in immigrant communities while being convicted of 34 felony counts for falsifying business records and an investigation for his role in the January 6th insurrection. His attempts to paint immigrants as the root of America’s problems are both hypocritical and dangerous. The real threat lies in his incitement of violence and perpetuation of lies, as evidenced by the Capitol attack, a direct consequence of his relentless spread of misinformation.

Fear-Mongering: Trump’s Go-To Playbook

Trump’s go-to tactic has always been to scapegoat immigrants for America’s problems, from crime to the economy. His relentless fear-mongering is designed to shift attention away from his failure to lead. This isn’t just about rhetoric; it’s about policies that harm millions of people. Trump’s administration pushed for immigration policies that tore families apart and stripped away protections, all under the guise of “national security.” Meanwhile, his lack of concrete plans on issues like healthcare left millions vulnerable.

The consequences of Trump’s fear-driven leadership extend beyond immigrants. His administration’s inaction on gun control, despite the epidemic of mass shootings, shows a profound indifference to American lives. His response? Empty thoughts and prayers, followed by calls to “get over it.” This is what “pro-life” looks like under Trump: a complete disregard for the lives of those who don’t fit into his narrative.

Conclusion: The Fight for Truth and Democracy

Donald Trump’s strategy has always been clear: distract, deceive, and divide. His reliance on misinformation and fear isn’t just dishonest, it’s dangerous. It’s not just about what he says at rallies or in debates; it’s about the real-world consequences of his words. Lives are at stake. Communities are torn apart. We, as citizens, have a responsibility to see through the lies. If we fail to hold Trump accountable, we risk losing not just our democracy, but the very values that make America worth fighting for.

America does have a problem…it’s Donald Trump’s dangerous rhetoric.
