The Girl Who Cried White Power

And your worst nightmare.

Presidential advisors— we hate 'em, we love 'em, we tolerate 'em, or we run 'em out of Washington, D.C. They even come with a nice, cushy salary of $180,000.

Advisors are usually, in fact, advisors. They're the one thing Congress (the Senate) can't snatch away from the President. They lack official power over departments, so they don't need to be voted upon by the ever-pesky Senate. Established officially as a title in 1992 by then-President Bill Clinton, presidential advisors have chipped away with their advice, recommendations, and influence.

Just like any other unelected position within the White House, presidential advisors are simply bound to clash with cabinet-level officials. Rahm Emanuel of the Clinton administration was particularly known for his bristly attitude. Jared Kushner and then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson got along until Kushner undermined Tillerson's efforts

But who is Laura Loomer? A self-described 'white advocate,'. Ms. Loomer can easily be described as a woman who wears many hats for the right-wing symphony. She's an actress who once wore a burqa and claimed to be Huma Abedin, a Democratic Party staffer, a startlingly good con woman who convinced men to conduct a climb-the-wall stunt, and, most importantly, the girl who cried wolf on the false claims that Haitian immigrants were eating cats and dogs.

Ms. Loomer is quite unlike any other advisor that's ever been put forth in the White House. She doesn't have Mr. Emmanuel's political experience or Mr. Kushner's campaigning experience. Unlike all the people before her, Ms. Loomer is just there for two things: enforcing loyalty and acting as an effective meat shield for Mr. Trump.

An April 2025 temper tantrum with Mr. Trump saw Ms. Loomer's efforts come to fruition. Almost half a dozen National Security Council officials were immediately fired (one was reassigned to a different department), a proposed Surgeon General, due to not being loyal enough. In a cabinet chock-full of loyal appointees, she described them as not loyal enough.

If meat shields do their job right, their aggressive advocacy for a President shifts blame from the President to their supporters. Mr. Trump never called Kamala Harris 'Shaniqua,' but Ms. Loomer did. Nor did he say that Indians were 'third world workers,' or even attack Republican party member Marjorie Taylor-Greene, describing her as a 'jealous, washed up hag.' The intent behind Ms. Loomer's centering in White House politics is clear: she is there to say, do, and carry out the things Mr. Trump cannot in his capacity as President of the United States. As a private citizen, this makes her exceptionally dangerous.

Ms. Loomer represents the first in her generation of 'activists' present in the White House, propagating dangerous rhetoric into the ears of the nation's most powerful. She's convinced the President to replace a licensed physician with a fitness influencer. In a nation centered around the 1st Amendment to protect free speech, her nonsense might seem harmless, but it shows how the United States has shifted towards a trend of allowing unelected ideologues to influence the decisions that affect our domestic politics. Unlike any other sitting position in the United States, Ms. Loomer can't be run out of office, be impeached, or fired. She technically doesn't even have a job.

What will it take for the politicians in this country to gain a backbone? Talk is not just talk. Ms. Loomer's words have been personally attributed to violent actions, like the murder of six-year-old Palestinian-American child, Wadea al-Fayoume, and the stabbing of his mother, Hanaan Shahin. She's proclaimed herself to be Islamophobic and has described herself as a self-styled 'white nationalist,' also claiming that it's different from 'white supremacy.'

I wish I could say I'm disappointed with how Ms. Loomer's power has been allowed to fester, but I'm not. Mr. Trump's internal staff has made a small amount of pathetic moves to limit her access. Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has feebly tried to keep her at arm's length. (Actual) Presidential Advisor Elon Musk made a pathetic attempt to limit her X account reach. Republicans have proved again that they're unwilling to take an actual stand against the genuinely delusional.

As I sit here and write, Ms. Loomer gallivants across Twitter, playing court jester to the highest position in the land—but this jester doesn't entertain, she emboldens. The consequences of her laughs aren't funny— they kill children. What will it take for our elected officials to stop laughing, stop looking away, and finally confront the chaos whispering in the President’s ear?
