Last week, former President Donald Trump had an interview with Tech Billionaire Elon Musk, one of his many media appearances in the past few weeks. Trump seems to be desperately trying to get media attention back on him. While his interviews and press conferences may generate press coverage, they also show something else. Desperation.
Following President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, polls have shown that Trump’s support is falling, and Vice President Kamala Harris is leading. The enthusiasm and support for the Vice President has seemingly rattled the Former President who hates nothing more than losing. His interview with Musk, along with other media appearances, has shown Trump to be increasingly deranged and verbose.

Personally, Trump’s interview with Musk has cemented my long-standing view of Trump as an incoherent rambler who resorts to cruel attacks on his opponents when he doesn't like how things are going. However, it also highlights Trump's history of grifting when it may benefit him politically.
The relationship between the Former President and Elon Musk has not always been so cordial. Musk voted for Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden and was a vocal Trump critic. After becoming a Republican in 2022, Musk supported Ron DeSantis for President, and was described by Trump as a “bullshit artist.”
Yet, after the assassination attempt, Musk endorsed Trump. Trump, seemingly in the hope of campaign funding from Musk, has all but embraced him. To me and to anyone who follows Trump's behavior, this is hardly surprising.
Throughout his political career, Trump has always done what is best for him, and what may help him politically. In this case, he seems to have embraced Musk hoping for financial assistance, but he has also pivoted on key issues to avoid public scrutiny. While politicians on both sides of the aisle may pivot for political gain, Trump has outdone other politicians. Trump does not seem to genuinely care about the issues we face and is more interested in doing what will help him- that should disgust all of us.
What I have taken away from all of this is that Trump is desperate and angry that his reign of terror in American politics may soon come to an end. While nothing is certain, polling seems to suggest that Vice President Harris is the frontrunner in the presidential race, which should be good news to everyone.
Since Trump’s entrance into politics, we have seen politics change dramatically. Trump has turned conversations about policy into insult-ridden rants and demonized his detractors. Trump has ignored the principles of freedom and Western Democracy, instead attempting to overturn the results of a free and fair election. Trump’s time in politics has been disastrous and has divided Americans.
If Trump loses, I can only hope it will be the end of the Trump era of American politics. We cannot continue down this path of division, anger, and hatred. It is my sincere hope that if Trump loses, the GOP will move away from right-wing populism and back to the Republican party of 10 years ago. And as a country, I hope we can once again learn to disagree respectfully and to stop hating the other side.
